Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan has been vocal about her mental health issues for years. She also actively promotes mental well-being, and the importance of seeking help from professionals. On Mental Health Day today, the Laal Singh Chadha actor joined Ira for a video sharing how there’s no shame in asking for help.
The video opened with Aamir Khan and Ira Khan saying how one goes to school to learn maths or a tuition teacher, or how we go to salons for haircuts and call carpenters or plumbers to get things repaired at home. “Jo kaam jaanta hai, trained ho,” he said. Ira added that one even heads to the doctor whenever they are unwell physically.
“Zindagi mein aise bohot saare kaam hai jo hum khud nahi kar paate. Jisme humme kisi aur vyakti ki madad lagti hai, jo yeh kaam jaanta hai. Aur yeh faisle hum badi asaani se le lete hai, begair kisi sharam ke, begair kisi jhijak ki (There are a lot of things in life that we cannot do ourselves. For that we need the help of others, someone who knows how to do that job. And we take these decisions so easily, without any shame or hesitation),” Aamir said in the video.
His daughter then adds that similarly, if someone is going through a tough time mentally or physically, they should reach out to people who are trained and professionals, without any hesitation.

“Aur doston meri beti Ira aur main pichle kayi saalon se therapy ka laabh utah rahe hai (Friends, I and my daughter have benefitted from therapy for years now). So if you are going through stress or any kind of tension, reach out for help from trained professionals. There is no shame in that. All the best,” the Dangal actor signed off.
Their followers heaped the father-daughter duo with words of encouragement for speaking on an important subject. Some of the comments read, “👏👏 one need courage to speak up ! Take care !,” “It’s so heartening to see you together! What you say is most valid and substantial. We should be open to own, discuss, seek help from professionals, even friends and family, the things that are shaking our emotional n mental balance,” and “Proud of you two to have raised this . Glad to have met you, Ira. Let’s help as much people as we can and make this world a better and acceptable place to live in 🙌 😍.”
Diagnosed with clinical depression nearly six years ago, Ira Khan made a series of confessional posts on social media, saying how her parent’s divorce affected her; how she battled mental health issues; and what has helped her cope with it. The desire to help others and share her lived experience is the reason that she has set up the Agatsu (which means self-victory) Foundation, which reaches out to other people who are battling similar issues. It runs a community centre, which hosts various activities and is open to all, as well as a clinic that provides medical help.
