J-K: Water level rising fast in Jhelum, tributaries due to continued rain; breaches flood alert at some places
The water level in the Jhelum river and its tributaries has risen rapidly over a few hours due to heavy rainfall at many places in Kashmir, crossing the flood alert mark at some places.
Authorities have advised the people living near the embankments of water bodies to remain alert and avoid venturing near the water.
An official of the Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) department on Saturday said the valley received a considerable amount of rainfall during the night and the “water level (discharge) in the tributaries or nallahs of the Jhelum basin is expected to rise in the coming hours.”
Kremlin: Turkey violated agreements by releasing Ukrainian fighters
Turkey violated agreements by releasing detained commanders of a a unit that for weeks defended a steel works in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday.
Peskov, quoted by RIA news agency, said under the terms of a prisoner exchange the fighters were to remain in Turkey until the end of the war. Russia had not been informed of their release, he said.
Heavy rain batters Rajasthan, four killed
Heavy to very heavy rain lashed several districts of Rajasthan, leading to four deaths in separate incidents in the last 24 hours, PTI reported.
A man and a woman died due to lightning in Chittorgarh while two men got drowned in two separate incidents in Sawai Madhopur, the police said on Saturday.
In Chittorgarh district, Heeralal Bhil of Samelia Majra village and Kesar Bai of Palkhedi village died on Friday due to lightning, the police said.
Burglar steals 1.5 kg jewellery from Delhi’s Daryanganj, arrested
The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested a burglar for allegedly stealing 1.5 kg jewellery from a showroom in Daryganj in central Delhi, said police, ANI reported.
The accused was identified as Naushad Ali (19), a native of Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh. The police said that almost all the stolen articles were recovered from his native place.
Gujarat: BSF employee `honey-trapped’ by Pak operative arrested for spying
The Gujarat ATS on Saturday apprehended an individual from Kutch on suspicion of divulging classified and sensitive information to a woman operative affiliated with Pakistan’s intelligence agency.
Nilesh Balia, the accused, was working in the electrical department of CPWD at the BSF’s Bhuj headquarters for the last five years, officials said.
Sunil Joshi, Gujarat ATS Superintendent of Police said Balia came in touch with the Pakistani agent in January 2023.
Gangster killed in police firing in Panipat, family alleges fake encounter
Hours after a gangster was killed and his accomplish sustained bullet injuries in cross-firing near Samalkha of Panipat, family members of the deceased have accused the police of fake-encounter.
The police claimed that the deceased Rakesh Kumar alias Raka (32), the younger brother of Priyavrat Fauji, key accused in murder of Sihdu Moose Wala, and Parveen Kumar of Panipat had allegedly opened fire at the police near Samalkha town on late fright night. The police had open fire and both Rakesh and Parveen alias Sonu sustained bullet injuries while Rakesh died in the hospital.
Scotland wants to decriminalise drugs; the UK government just says no
The Scottish government has proposed decriminalising possession of all drugs for personal use to tackle one of Europe’s highest overdose death rates, reported AP.
The suggestion was almost instantly blocked by the Conservative UK government in London, which said it had “no plans” to soften drug laws.
Minor girl abducted from Jammu rescued in Uttar Pradesh, 1 held
15-year-old girl from Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua, who was allegedly abducted by a youth, was recovered from Uttar Pradesh, police said on Saturday, reported PTI.
Puneet Kumar (19), a resident of New Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla area, was arrested during the rescue operation, a police spokesperson said.
On July 4, the victim’s father filed a missing complaint of his daughter at Rajbagh police station, he said.
Gurugram: Goons held for threatening toll plaza staff to give up contract
Three men associated with jailed gangster Sube Gurjar were arrested for allegedly threatening Ghamroj toll plaza staff with guns to give up the toll contract, police said on Saturday, PTI reported.
A manpower contractor of Sohna Road toll plaza had on Friday filed a complaint at Bhondsi Police Station alleging that the previous night 5-7 individuals arrived at the toll plaza in a Scorpio car carrying double-barrel guns and threatened him to vacate the space by morning.

BSF recovers another Pak drone near International Border in Punjab’s Tarn Taran
The Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday intercepted another drone near India-Pakistan Border in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, the force said on Saturday, ANI reported.
The drone was intercepted at around 9.05 pm on Friday near Pallopati village inTarn Taran district and the BDF troops immediately reacted to intercept the drone as per the laid down drill.
Further during a thorough search of the depth area on Saturday at about 11.25 am, the BSF said, its troops recovered a drone from the farming field adjacent to Rajoke village in Tarn Taran district.
US cluster bombs for Ukraine show ‘weakness’: Russia
Washington’s decision to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions is an “act of desperation” which displays “weakness”, Russia’s foreign ministry said on Saturday, reported AFP.
“It is an act of desperation and shows weakness against the backdrop of the failure of the much-touted Ukrainian counteroffensive,” ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.
22 killed in air strike on Sudan’s Omdurman
22 people were killed and scores more injured in an air strike by Sudan’s army on Omdurman city, the country’s health ministry said on Saturday, Reuters reported.
Four IAF Rafale fighter jets land at France Air Base to take part in Bastille Day parade
An Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent of four Rafale fighter jets, and two C-17 Globemasters, which are slated to participate in the Bastille Day flypast over the Champs Elysees in Paris on July 14, landed at the Evreux-Fauville Air Base in France on Friday.
Officials said that the IAF flying contingent of 4 Rafale aircraft and 2 C-17 Globemasters were welcomed by the French Air and Space Force (FASF).
The officials also stated that the Rafales were refuelled by IAF’s IL-78 tankers while flying to France, enabling the Rafales to finish the direct voyage from India to France.
Former Mizoram minister Beichhua to join BJP
Former Mizo National Front (MNF) leader K Beichhua, who resigned as a minister last year, will join the BJP ahead of the Mizoram assembly polls later this year, a BJP leader said.
The veteran Mara politician said he will formally join the saffron camp after poll dates are announced, BJP media convener Johny Lalthanpuia told PTI on Saturday.
Beichhua said he will contest the polls from Siaha in south Mizoram on a BJP ticket.
Five children drown in pond in UP’s Raebareli
In a tragic incident, five children aged 8-12 years lost their lives while trying to save one of them from drowning in a pond on Saturday afternoon in Gadaganj area of the district, PTI reported.
Superintendent of Police Alok Priyadarshi said that the children had gone for a bath and were playing in the water when one of them started drowning. The others tried to rescue the child but they too drowned.
Man stabbed to death in Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla, 2 arrested
Two men were arrested for allegedly killing a person over a trivial issue in north Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla area, police said on Saturday.
The accused have been identified as Abhishek alias Dancer (21) and Sunit (18), residents of Shastri Nagar, they said.
On Wednesday around 10 pm, victim Kamal (23), a resident of Wazirpur, was stabbed to death by Abhishek with the help of Sunit, a senior police officer said.
Seven people including two children killed by a gas explosion in a van in Pakistan
A fire in a passenger van in eastern Pakistan Saturday killed seven people, including two children, a government official said, reported AP.
The dead included four members of the same family — a woman, her daughter and her two granddaughters. Eight passengers received burn injuries of various degrees.
Grenade attack, gun battle leaves 2 Iran police dead
A grenade attack and gun battle in Iran’s southeast near Pakistan left four assailants and two Iranian policemen dead on Saturday, local media said, reported AFP.
It was the latest violence in Sistan-Baluchistan province, where unrest has involved drug smuggling gangs, rebels from the Baluchi minority and Sunni Muslim extremist groups.
There was no immediate indication of who carried out the attack.

Met warns of extremely heavy rains in 7 districts of Himachal on July 8, 9
The meteorological department office here on Saturday issued a ‘red’ alert for seven districts of Himachal Pradesh, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on July 8 and 9.
In Solan district’s Kasauli, a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in the morning damaged three houses undergoing construction. Residents of the buildings were evacuated to safety, officials said, adding that there were no casualties in the incident.
The weather office issued a statement saying intense spells of extremely heavy rainfall are likely at isolated places in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur districts on July 8 and 9 under the influence of an active western disturbance.
Russia seeks UN Security Council meeting on Nord Stream blasts
Russia has requested a new meeting of the U.N. Security Council for July 11 to discuss last September’s explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, a senior Russian diplomat at the United Nations said on Saturday.
Russia has unsuccessfully demanded access to investigations by Sweden and other countries into the blasts, which severely damaged the pipelines connecting Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea.
Six killed in Russian shelling in eastern Ukraine
Six people were killed on Saturday in Lyman in eastern Ukraine after the town came under fire from Russian rockets, the regional governor said.
“At least six people were killed and five injured… At around 10:00 am, the Russians struck the town with multiple rocket launchers,” Donetsk regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on social media.
