Celebrity stylist Tanya Ghavri spoke about the challenges of catering to Bollywood celebrities, and said that it is very important that someone in her position drops their ego and gets on with the job, regardless of the difficulties. She also said that her best professional relationships have been with stars who’ve trusted her over time, but also pointed out that the industry lacks a certain loyalty.
Appearing on Varun Duggi’s podcast, Tanya said that for the first decade of her career, she worked ‘like a dog’, but she was happy to. Recalling an anecdote, she said that she once did a fitting for Katrina Kaif at 2 am. “I would go back home, post-promotions, sometimes at 10 pm at night, sleep, wake up and do fittings with her at 2 am. I may have been working hard, but she was working double hard,” she said.
Tanya said that celebrities are usually working under immense pressure, and can’t deal with anybody else’s tantrums because, at the end of the day, it’s them in front of the camera. “Everybody I’ve worked with, it’s been a collaborative process. When I work with an actor, if I don’t like something, I’ll tell them. I’ll be very clear. Initially, I used to be very scared, but then I realised that I’ve been offered this job for a reason,” she said.
She continued, “The people I’ve worked with the longest, whether it’s Kareena, Katrina or Janhvi or Freida, are the people my best work comes out on. We understand each other; it’s completely collaborative…” Pointing out that ‘trust comes with time’, and citing the example of a Hollywood stylist who has worked with certain celebrities for two decades, Tanya said that Bollywood is ‘lacking in unity’. “We’re in a phase where everybody wants to work with everybody. That’s awesome, go ahead, do it. But the more chances you give somebody, their work is going to get better and better.”
Tanya said that there was a point in her career where she was working with so many people that she knew she was dividing her time and energy between them, and not giving it her all. It was Freida Pinto who advised her to step away from toxic clients and focus on a select few.
