The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan was always supposed to do well, but few could’ve anticipated the sheer number of records that it has broken in the course of its month-long run in theatres. After debuting worldwide on September 7, the film is still generating considerable buzz at the box office, thanks to well-timed discounts, a lack of competition, and unprecedented goodwill for SRK.
Directed by Atlee, Jawan debuted mere months after Shah Rukh’s big comeback film, Pathaan, which emerged as an all-time blockbuster in its own right before being overtaken. Pathaan concluded its domestic run with Rs 543 crore nett in the bank, and grossed Rs 1050 crore worldwide. Both these records were broken by Jawan, which was designed as SRK’s first pan-India film. The film has made Rs 625 crore so far domestically, and has grossed nearly Rs 1,120 crore worldwide. Jawan also features Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara, Deepika Padukone, Priyamani, Sunil Grover, Sanya Malhotra, Ridhi Dogra and others.
The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and fans, which helped sustain interest across weeks. Praise was directed towards the film’s political messaging and its action. As the movie nears the end of its theatrical run, here’s a rundown of all the major records that it has broken so far.
Jawan made Rs 75 crore on its first day of release, setting a new record for the biggest-ever debut in Bollywood history. It overtook the record set by Pathaan, which had made Rs 57 crore on day one of release, across all languages.
On day four of release, a Sunday, Jawan amassed Rs 80 crore across all languages at the box office in the country. This set a new record for the biggest single-day haul in the history of Hindi movies, overtaking its own opening day haul.
Jawan recorded total footfalls of 3.5 crore across the country, making it the number one Indian film of the year, in any language. The film was also released in dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions, which generated around Rs 60 crore in total.
Jawan overtook Pathaan’s record of Rs 543 crore to emerge as the biggest Hindi-language hit of all time in India. The film has since added nearly Rs 100 crore more to its total, which currently stands at Rs 625 crore. Jawan is also the first Hindi movie to make more than Rs 600 crore in its home market.
According to a Pinkvilla report, Jawan has recovered Rs 730 crore so far, after factoring in distributors’ shares. The film generated Rs 480 crore through the theatrical market, and Rs 250 crore through digital, satellite and music rights. The previous record of Rs 660 crore was held by Pathaan.
