Karnataka deputy CM DK Shivakumar on Friday said there was no need for a bandh over Cauvery row as his government is protecting the interests of the state. “There was no need for bandh, which some organisations have called,” Shivakumar said, adding that the state government ensured that no one faced hardship during the bandh, which he added was peaceful, and vehicles plied and shops were open at many places as usual. The Karnataka bandh called by ‘Kannada Okkoota’ to oppose the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu disrupted normal life in Bengaluru and other southern parts of the state on Friday. Authorities had clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in Bengaluru Urban, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Ramanagara and Hassan districts, and declared holiday for schools and colleges there. At least 44 flights to and from the Kempegowda International Airport were cancelled owing to the bandh. The state transport corporations, too, cancelled many of their bus services, especially in the Cauvery basin districts of Mysuru, Mandya and Chamarajanagar, where the bandh had the most impact. Most of the shops, business establishments and eateries in these districts were closed and private vehicles were off the roads. The bandh evoked a mixed response in other regions of the state.
The Election Commission of India delegation led by CEC Rajiv Kumar and ECs Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel arrived at Jaipur, earlier today to review the poll preparedness for the forthcoming Assembly Elections in Rajasthan.
During the Karnataka bandh on Friday, which was called by pro-Kannada organisations and farmers' groups to protest the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu, hundreds of protesters were imprisoned. Over 700 agitators who attempted to block roads during the one-day shutdown were apprehended by the Bengaluru Police.
