Sunny Deol gave some of his biggest hits in the 1990s with filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi. Films like Ghayal and Ghatak are among Sunny’s most popular films, and in Damini, where Sunny had a special appearance, he walked away with all the glory. The film also won him a National Film Award, but since then, the two have never worked together. So recently, when the duo’s collaboration was announced by Aamir Khan Productions in Lahore 1947, fans were quite excited about it.
It was evident that the hit director-actor duo had a fallout but in a recent chat with News 18, Santoshi opened up about it and said, “We did have a fallout. But he recognised me at a time when the world didn’t know me. Ghayal is my first film. He gave me the opportunity to make the film. He produced it. I was very new to the film industry but he gave me the full freedom to make the film my way. Yeh unka badappan hai (It is his greatness.)”
The rumours of Santoshi and Deol’s rift started after the two of the them were reported to be making two films on Bhagat Singh. Santoshi was apparently supposed to direct Sunny Deol’s 23rd March 1931: Shaheed, which starred Bobby Deol in the lead role. Instead, he chose to direct The Legend of Bhagat Singh starring Ajay Devgn. This reportedly led to a rift between the two. The films then clashed at the box office. Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol never worked together after this.
Earlier, in a chat with Bollywood Hungama, Santoshi said that after the success of Ghayal, him and Sunny were supposed to work in Ghatak and Damini’s special appearance was not meant for Sunny. In fact, he had thought of Om Puri for the role. “Yes, we had the thought of bringing in Om Puri and showing his confrontation with Amrish Puri. Sunny had become a very big hero after Ghayal. He was supposed to do another action-packed film, Ghatak, with me. And the character in Damini comes in reel no 12. Hence, we thought that instead of Sunny, we should bring in Om Puri. However, the producer and Om Puri’s secretary had some misunderstandings over the fees. Then I thought of trying Sunny. And he came on board gladly,” he shared.
Sunny has recently delivered the biggest hit of his career, Gadar 2.
