Local elected officials and state housing agency representatives joined developers at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday for a $25 million affordable housing project in Freeport.
The new 41,833-square-foot building, known as the Allan and Geraldine Rosenberg Residence, is located at 81 South Bergen Place and has 44 one-bedroom apartments for renters aged 55 and over and a two-bedroom unit for the superintendent.
Completed late last year and now fully occupied, 30 percent of the units in the new development are dedicated to frail or disabled formerly homeless seniors, supported by funding through the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative.
“Before I lived here, I did not have a permanent apartment. Affordable housing is essential to every community and especially to me as I would not be here speaking to you today without it,” Erica Diaz, a resident of the new building, said at the ribbon-cutting. “Moving here created stability and security knowing that this will be my forever home and it has provided a new sense of community. I will respect my home as I know what it is like not to have one.”
The project, built on a formerly vacant lot, was developed by Manhattan-based Selfhelp Realty Group and designed by architectural firm Studio Libeskind. Amenities include a rooftop terrace, walking track and community space.
Each apartment in the Freeport building opens directly to a communal courtyard with full-height windows that provide views of landscaping and create opportunities for community connection, according to the developer.
The five-story building also incorporates passive house design principles with energy-efficient features that are in line with Enterprise Green Communities and Energy Star Multifamily High Rise programs that promote sustainability and resiliency, the developer says.
“We believe everyone deserves affordable housing, and we are proud to introduce the Allan & Geraldine Rosenberg Residence as our 17th building,” said Evelyn Wolff, executive director of Selfhelp Realty Group. “Designed by the renowned Studio Libeskind, this iconic building reflects our commitment to affordable housing and community-centered design. Working with the visionary architect Daniel Libeskind has been an incredible honor, as his innovative design prioritizes community and creates a sense of belonging.”
