Sonu Nigam was counted among the biggest singers in Bollywood during the ’90s and early 2000s. He gave music lovers gems such as “Yeh Dil Deewana” (Pardes), “Satrangi Re” (Dil Se), “Tanhayee” (Dil Chahta Hai), “Saathiya” (Saathiya), and “Sandese Aate Hai” (Border). He has also provided the singing voice of Bollywood’s ‘Badshah’ Shah Rukh Khan in several films since 1997’s Pardes. He claimed that actors rarely fight to hire singers in films.
While interacting with Zoom Entertainment recently, he said, “I don’t think actors fight or interfere with singers in their films. If that was the case, I would still be singing for Shah Rukh Khan. They (actors) think this is the composer’s or director’s department. The best they can do is give their preference. But they don’t fight for anyone.”
In recent months, Sonu’s voice has been heard in films such as Mission Majnu, Shehzada, Adipurush, and Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha. Speaking about bagging the songs in Laal Singh Chaddha, Sonu said, “Aamir was himself the producer of the film, so he thought that this song should be mine.”
But, there was a time when Sonu had been made a pariah in the industry, and yet filmmakers Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani put their foot down to have him work with them. The singer recalled, “In PK, when I sang the song (‘Bhagwan Hai Kahan Re Tu’), I had a tiff with the music companies. But, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra put their foot down, ‘Sonu hi gaayega’ (only Sonu will sing this song).”
Going forward, Sonu said that he has no ‘plans, dreams, or ambitions’. He said that he takes each day as it comes.
