The low supply of vegetables coupled with the high demand for greens owing to the ongoing Pitru Paksha has pushed up vegetable prices in Pune. Pitru Paksha is a fortnight dedicated to the worship of one’s ancestors and involves the preparation of special meals by using vegetables like cluster beans, lady fingers, bitter gourd, and soft gourd, among others. Vilas Bhujbal, a commission agent with the Gultekdi Market Yard, said the present trend is expected to continue till October 15 and prices would soften thereafter. Barring tomatoes, most vegetables in the wholesale markets are selling in the range of Rs 50-140/kg. Green peas are the costliest with the vegetable selling between Rs 65-140/kg.

Shifting focus to international news: Israel is escalating measures against the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip to a “total blockade” including a ban on admitting food and fuel, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said today. The Israel-Palestine fighting has continued for more than 48 hours, after the initial surprise Hamas attack on Saturday, with rocket sirens being activated in central and southern Israel Monday afternoon. The conflict has killed over 1,100 people on both sides, and Israeli media said that around 130 Israelis, including civilians and soldiers, have been taken as hostages. Lastly: The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, the final prize of this year’s Nobels season, was awarded to Claudia Goldin “for having advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes.” Goldin is only the third woman to win the prize, which was announced by Hans Ellegren, secretary-general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, in Stockholm. Goldin does not offer solutions, but her research allows policymakers to tackle the entrenched problem, said economist Randi Hjalmarsson, a member of the prize committee. “She explains the source of the gap, and how it’s changed over time and how it varies with the stage of development. And therefore, there is no single policy,” Hjalmarsson said.
