Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film, 12th Fail, recently started streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar and brought to light the real-life story of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Manoj Kumar Sharma. Sharma once had Mumbai’s suburbs, Bandra and Andheri, under his jurisdiction. Hence, he worked closely with several Bollywood actors as he organised the Mumbai Police annual event, Umang. After working with the stars closely, Sharma realised how humble and hard-working actors are. He also revealed that all of them attend and perform at Umang without charging a penny.
Talking to Lallantop, Sharma shared, “The additional SP of that area has the responsibility to conduct this event for the police, called Umang. It happens every year for the Mumbai police. It is a big programme for the welfare of Mumbai police. After going there, I got to know that all the actors came for the programme free of cost. They don’t charge a penny for it. They come only because Mumbai Police invite them.”

He added, “Be it anyone, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh or Shah Rukh Khan, everyone comes for it. That programme continues for about five hours, including the performances.”
Umang 2023 took place in December and was attended by Ananya Panday, Aditya Roy Kapur, Ranveer Singh, Shilpa Shetty, Kiara Advani and Karan Johar, among others. Shah Rukh and Salman performed to their hit numbers at the event.

The story of Sharma’s life was brought alive on screen by actor Vikrant Massey. The two worked closely to get the intricacies of the on-screen character of Sharma right and keep the story as real as possible. While he helped the makers in giving attention to detail, Sharma also realised how difficult a job filmmaking is.
He said, “I have realised that the kind of effort these guys are putting in, we may only see what they have shot, but the kind of hard work that goes into it is amazing. Gazab ki mehnat karte hain. Nobody has that sort of strength. It is not that easy. I recently got to know that for one shoot, they have to be at one place for 5-10 days.”

12th Fail received rave reviews from critics and the audience. The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave the movie a 3-star rating and wrote in her review, “Vikrant Massey-starrer cleaves close to ground reality, with characters that make you feel that they’ve wandered off the street, dishing out life-lessons laced with dollops of inspiration.”
