Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal registered its lowest single-day box office haul on its 11th day of release, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. But even the film’s lowest day is bigger than the opening days that many Bollywood movies have been able to manage in recent years. Animal has been delivering huge numbers at the box office, despite its daunting run time and polarising reception.
On its second Monday, the box office collection of the Ranbir Kapoor-led film stood at Rs 13 crore, which marks a 65.28% decline from Sunday’s earnings (Rs 36 crore). This brings the film’s total domestic collection to Rs 443.27 crore, with Rs 400.37 crore coming from the Hindi version, Rs 38.8 cr from Telugu, Rs 3.43 cr from Tamil and Rs 0.56 cr and Rs 0.11 cr from Kannada and Malayalam versions respectively.
The film has been competing against Shah Rukh Khan’s last superhit, Jawan, to become the all-time top grosser of Hindi cinema. But Atlee’s blockbuster had registered a collection of Rs 16.25 crore on its second Monday. Globally, Animal has amassed a collection of Rs 737.98 crore within 11 days of its release, as per T-Series.
However, Animal’s Hindi version has now overtaken KGF: Chapter 2 on the all-time list. The Hindi version of the Yash-starrer ended its run in the theatres with Rs 434.70 crore. The list is topped by Jawan (Rs 643.87 cr), Pathaan (Rs 543.05 cr), Gadar 2 (Rs 525.45 cr) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’s Hindi version (Rs 510.99 cr). Animal has another week to progress on the list, before Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki and Prabhas’ Salaar releases on December 21. Animal is currently the seventh-biggest Hindi movie of all time on the global box office chart.
The film is centered around Ranbir Kapoor’s character Ranvijay, who is out to avenge an assassination attempt on his steel-magnate father, played by Anil Kapoor. Some are hailing Animal for its top-notch performances (Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Tripti Dimri), while others are calling it out for its portrayal of toxic masculinity and violence.
