Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, is making the most of the time it has left before Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki arrives in theatres this week. After entering the Rs 500 crore club domestically on Sunday, the film recorded its lowest-ever single-day haul on Monday. It earned Rs 5.50 crore on its 18th day, reported industry tracker Sacnilk.
The total domestic collection of Animal now stands at Rs 517.94 crore. The film needs only around Rs 8 crore to surpass Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 as the sixth highest-grossing Indian film in India. Gadar 2 ended its theatrical run with Rs 525.7 crore. But time is running out for Animal, with Dunki and Salaar around the corner. SRK’s previous two releases, Jawan (Rs 640.25 cr) and Pathaan (Rs 543.09 cr) hold the fourth and fifth positions in the list of all-time highest-grossing Indian films.
Despite mixed reviews from audiences and critics, Animal has earned Rs 835 crore globally, making it the third Indian film of the year to pass the $100 million milestone, after Pathaan and Jawan. But the road towards the Rs 1000 crore mark looks tough given the competition from SRK’s Dunki and Prabhas’ Salaar which releases on December 22.
Earlier, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma had commended Animal’s success while writing his five takeaways from the film. He wrote on X, “The mega box office proves that all Indians now love and respect a not-to-be-loved and respected director (Sandeep Reddy Vanga). All Indians now realise that all Indians have grown up.”
Animal was released in theatres on December 1 along with director Meghana Gulzar’s biographical drama Sam Bahadur. The Vicky Kaushal-starrer didn’t get as many takers at the box office and has earned Rs 78.25 crore domestically till Monday. Globally, the film finally passed the Rs 100 crore gross mark earlier this week.
