The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, is cooling down at the box office after a spectacular run that trampled over poor reviews, backlash, and other obstacles such as a long run time and an A rating. On its 19th day of release, the movie made Rs 5 crore in India, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, taking its total domestic collections to Rs 522 crore. The movie should pass Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 (Rs 525 crore) on the all-time chart today, and will then set its sights on passing Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (Rs 543 crore).
Animal opened to huge numbers, and has since made nearly Rs 850 crore globally, which puts it on the number three spot for Indian movies this year, behind Pathaan and Jawan. Both those blockbusters grossed over Rs 1000 crore in their theatrical runs, a number that looks out of reach for Animal, considering the dual competition it’ll face this week. Shah Rukh’s third film of the year, Dunki, will debut on Thursday, followed by Prabhas’ Salaar on Friday.

Animal is expected to lose a majority of its theatres to the two releases, but if even one of them underperforms, guess who’ll be ready to replace them? Animal is already the biggest A-rated movie of all time, and the biggest of both Vanga and Ranbir Kapoor’s careers. The film outclassed Meghna Gulzar biopic Sam Bahadur, which debuted on the same day and has since made around an eighth of what Animal has.
It also defied poor reviews that called out its misogynist tone and glorification of toxic masculinity. The films extended cast has been defending certain creative choices made by Vanga, who experienced similar pushback following the release of his first two movies – Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh. But Animal’s success has validated his brand of cinema, which revels in hyper-violence and provocation.
