After knocking it out of the park in its first four days of release, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s controversial crime thriller, Animal, built on the momentum on day five. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Animal will comfortably pass the Rs 250 crore mark in India today, and should be able to pass the Rs 450 crore gross mark worldwide. This would make it Ranbir Kapoor’s second-biggest release in both India and abroad, ahead of Brahmastra and behind Sanju. According to Comscore, Animal finished its first weekend of release as the number one film worldwide, ahead of Napoleon and the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Animal has pre-sold tickets worth Rs 10 crore for day five, and live tracking reports Animal’s Tuesday figures to be around Rs 8 crore by early afternoon. The film made Rs 40 crore on day four, passing the Monday test with flying colours. Animal managed to outdo first Monday collections of recent hits such as Jawan, Pathaan and Gadar 2, and claimed the number three spot on the all-time Monday rankings, behind Tiger 3 and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Tiger 3, it should be noted, opened on a Sunday, which made Monday only its second day of release. It should also be noted that Animal is generating these collections despite being nearly three and a half hours long, is competing against Sam Bahadur, and is rated A – all three factors are limiting its accessibility.

The film should easily pass the Rs 500 crore global gross mark in its first week of release, and after that, it will set its sights on overtaking the lifetime earnings of Sanju. Released in 2018, the biopic remains Ranbir’s biggest-ever hit, with Rs 342 crore in India and nearly Rs 590 crore worldwide. Ranbir’s post-pandemic run has been marked by ups and downs. His first film since Sanju, the period masala movie Shamshera, flopped outright, but Brahmastra and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar were declared semi-hits, grossing big numbers but being withheld by their bloated budgets.
Vanga, on the other hand, is riding a wave of success. In his short career, he has never delivered a flop film, although he hasn’t directed a non-controversial movie either. Many are criticising Animal’s glorification of toxic masculinity and general misogynist tone; the same complaints were also made against Vanga’s first two films, Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh. He will next direct a film starring Prabhas, after which he will work on a film starring Allu Arjun. A sequel to Animal was teased in a post-credits scene as well.
