Despite a gradual decline in daily box office collections since entering its second week in theatres, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal continues to generate significant revenue compared to many recent releases, even on weekdays.
After earning Rs 23.34 crore in India on Friday, the film maintained respectable figures on Saturday too, recording Rs 25.95 crore, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk at 7 pm on December 9. Its total domestic nett currently stands at Rs 386.48 crore.
Compared to its major competitor, Atlee Kumar’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan (Rs 19.1 crore), Animal achieved a superior second Friday collection. However, it remains to be seen if the film can replicate the same success on the second Saturday as well, given that the SRK movie garnered Rs 31.8 nett in the country.
During the morning shows on Saturday, Animal recorded an overall 31.10 per cent occupancy in the Hindi market. The movie has currently amassed Rs 600 crore worldwide, as reported by T-Series, and holds the position of the fourth-biggest Hindi film of the year, trailing behind Gadar 2, Pathaan and Jawan. It has also surpassed the box office collection of Sanju to become Ranbir’s highest-grossing film.
Also starring Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in key roles, Animal is anticipated to maintain its dominance at the box office until the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki in theatres on December 21.
Meanwhile, apart from widespread criticism against its blatant misogyny and glorification of toxic masculinity and violence, Animal has become embroiled in a new controversy following a complaint by Chhattisgarh Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan in the Rajya Sabha, stating that her daughter broke down in tears after watching the crime epic.
“Cinema is a mirror of society. We have grown up watching cinema, and it can influence the youth. First, there were films like Kabir Singh and Pushpa, and now there is Animal. My daughter went to watch the film with her college friends, and walked out midway through because she couldn’t stop crying,” Aaj Tak quoted her as saying.
The MP also criticised the use of the song “Arjan Vailly” in the film. “As far as ‘Arjan Vailly’ is concerned, Hari Singh Nalwa, the commander-in-chief of the Sikh Force, who fought against the Mughals, against the British, his son was Arjan Singh Nalwa. He saved many Muslims from Pakistan’s Gujranwala, before the Partition. The movie uses this historical song in a gang war setting, and this could hurt religious sentiments.”
