The BAFTAs have responded to reports that a social media prankster joined the Oppenheimer team onstage as they accepted the best film prize at Sunday’s awards.
The man, whom the British Academy did not name, was “removed by security” after he took the stage with Oppenheimer writer-director-producer Christopher Nolan, producers Emma Thomas and Charles Roven and actor Cillian Murphy.
“We are taking this very seriously and don’t wish to grant him any publicity by commenting further,” a spokesperson for BAFTA added in a statement.
The man, wearing a dark suit and black hat, could be seen standing behind Thomas as she delivered her acceptance speech alongside Nolan and Murphy.
Viewers may have thought he was affiliated with the film as he appeared to take the stage as Thomas urged more of the Oppenheimer team to join her onstage.
“Where are you? Come on, all of you!,” Thomas said in part as the man could be seen walking up the steps to the stage.
After her speech, the man appeared to tuck something under his arm and clapped before walking offstage with the filmmakers.
Presenter Michael J. Fox and host David Tennant were also onstage when the incident took place, yet no one seemed to interact with the crasher.
The prankster is reportedly a YouTuber who has also crashed the Brit Awards and FIFA Ballon d’Or awards in France.
Oppenheimer was the big winner at the BAFTAs, taking home seven awards including best film, best director for Nolan and best actor for Murphy.
