Actor Bobby Deol is currently enjoying the success of his recent movie Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Despite having only 15 minutes of screen time in the lengthy 3.5-hour film, Bobby, who played the brutal villain Abrar, has won over the audience. In an interview, he said that he doesn’t judge his characters, and said that he played Abrar as if he was the hero of his own story, ready to do anything for his family. Bobby also shared that both he and Ranbir Kapoor were unsure about whom to sympathise with in the film.
In an interview with Zoom Entertainment, Bobby said, “I didn’t look at myself as a villain in the film because Abrar loses his grandfather in front of his eyes, who burns himself, and that shock takes away his voice. So, he swears that he’ll avenge his grandfather’s death, and he’s a very family-oriented man. He’s romantic; he has three wives and would kill for his family. So, that was the thought that was there in my mind while playing it. That’s why when you see the character, you feel for the character, even though he’s supposed to be the antagonist. And I think when we were shooting the fight sequence, even Ranbir said that to me, ‘We don’t know who to sympathise with.’”
In one scene, Bobby’s character Abrar learns about his brother’s death and reacts violently. He kills the messenger and assaults the youngest of his three wives. After that, he signals for his other two wives to join them in the bedroom. Actor Mansi Taxak, who played Abrar’s youngest wife, said in a recent interview that the scene was ‘apt’ for the moment, and that Abrar was not in his senses.
However, Bobby said that characters like this exist in our society. The actor continued, “I don’t judge the characters, because there are characters like this that exist in our society, in our world, and I’m just portraying different characters while I’m an actor. So, it’s a challenge because you’re not being yourself; you’re being someone else. I don’t look at the character as I’m trying to prove a point or promote something. I’m playing a character because that’s an actor’s dream – to play different characters.”
Also starring Rashmika Mandanna and Anil Kapoor in pivotal roles, Animal has already minted nearly Rs 600 crore worldwide.
