Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu in the lead roles, is all set for release on December 21. One of the most anticipated movies of the year, Dunki has already grossed Rs 5.51 crore in advance bookings and is ahead of its main contender, Prashanth Neel’s Prabhas-starrer Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire.
Meanwhile, three days ahead of the film’s release, the production company Red Chillies Entertainment released a special video featuring SRK, Taapsee and Rajkumar Hirani engaged in a heartwarming conversation about the origin story of Dunki and various aspects of its production.
The 29-minute video kicks off with Shah Rukh Khan’s signature wit as he urges director Rajkumar Hirani to narrate the whole story of the film to the viewers so that they don’t have any confusion regarding Dunki or how to pronounce it. However, an “intelligent” Hirani points out to SRK that revealing the entire story now would discourage people from watching the movie in theatres. “This is why Rajkumar Hirani is Rajkumar Hirani. He never reveals the story of his movies, not even in trailers,” SRK quips, causing the filmmaker and star Taapsee Pannu to burst into laughter.
As the video progresses further, Hirani can be seen explaining how some intriguing residential structures he came across in Punjab planted seeds of thoughts in his mind, which further developed into the exploration and understanding of Donkey flights, eventually leading to the birth of Dunki.
“Dunki means being apart from your loved ones,” SRK quotes from the film, underscoring that this is the fundamental emotion and essence of the movie, as he proceeds to showcase images detailing the origin story of Dunki.
Throughout the chat, the trio also ensured they radiated absolute charm and playfulness, exchanging light-hearted banter and adding to the lively atmosphere. Sharing a picture of Taapsee standing on a sand-laden ground prepared for gatta gusthi with a couple of pehlwans in the background, flexing her biceps while Baadshah sits on the ground, Shah Rukh inquires about the backstory behind this image. Before she can respond, SRK playfully suggests, “I feel like this means that just because I am doing action films nowadays, Taapsee too wants to do them,” sparking laughter from the other two. However, Taapsee escalates the humour by commenting that the picture reflects her “joy of beating up Shah Rukh Khan and realising that I will not get offers from now on.”
“After doing five or six sports films, I was finally relieved, thinking that I was going to do a romantic film with SRK. And then the first thing I was asked to do for Dunki was to learn gusthi. And then I was told that the one I needed to beat up was SRK himself. I was left wondering what kind of romance this was,” Taapsee remarked.
Also starring Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani, Anil Grover and Vikram Kochhar, Dunki’s music has been composed by Pritam. The film is Shah Rukh Khan’s third release this year after Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan and Atlee Kumar’s Jawan.
