LOS ANGELES, CA — Emmy fans, your wait is over! The 2023 Emmy Awards will finally take place on Jan. 15, following a four-month delay precipitated by Hollywood’s labor unrest and strife in the film and television industries.
Originally planned for Sept. 2023, the 75th Emmy Awards show was postponed due to a protracted work stoppage that began in May 2023 when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) hit the picket lines. In July 2023, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) followed suit.
The two guilds and the studios finally reached an agreement in Nov. 2023, ending six tumultuous months of bargaining impasse in contract negotiations. In the end, both writing and acting unions were able to secure provisions for higher minimum pay as well as protections over the use of artificial intelligence.
So, get excited, TV fans! The biggest night in television is upon us. And the timing could not be more perfect for Emmys’ diamond anniversary celebration. For once, television’s annual awards ceremony will be held in the thick of the awards season, one week after the 2024 Golden Globes.
This year, actor and comedian Anthony Anderson takes center stage as master of ceremonies for the first time. HBO’s “Succession” is the television show to beat. The one-percenter-dynasty drama series leads all Emmy contenders with 27 nominations for its fourth and final season, including best drama as well as acting nods for Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook. Will “Succession” take home the most Emmys of the evening?
All eyes will also be on Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso,” as it leads in the comedy categories with 21 nominations, including best comedy series and best actor for Jason Sudeikis.
The big question though is: Will HBO’s whopping 127 total nominations prevail over Netflix’s impressive 103 nods? Regardless, it is time to pop the bubbly and get ready to watch TV’s biggest night of the year.
