President Droupadi Murmu on 17th October, Tuesday conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award on veteran icon Waheeda Rehman at the 69th National Film Awards ceremony at New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan. Actors Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon received their Best Actor (Female) Award for ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and ‘Mimi’ respectively. Murmu said during her address – “Sympathetic and artistic portrayal of female characters will increase sensitivity and respect for women.” ‘The Kashmir Files’ won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film on National Integration. The President also made a special mention of ‘RRR’, which bagged several awards. Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Anurag Thakur and other senior officials were also present at the ceremony.
Meanwhile, accompanied by her husband, actor Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt graced the National Film Awards ceremony in New Delhi on 17th October. As pictures and videos of Alia at the ceremony went viral, fans were quick to notice her choice of attire, as she wore the same Sabyasachi wedding saree for this special occasion. At the ceremony, she expressed her gratitude and said – “There is a lot of gratitude in my heart to get the opportunity to portray such a beautiful character, so wonderfully imagined by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.” Gangubai Kathiawadi also claimed several other National Awards, including Best Screenplay (Adapted) for Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Utkarshini Vashishtha, Best Dialogue Writer and Best Editing at the 69th National Awards.
Kareena Kapoor Khan-starrer “The Buckingham Murders” will open the upcoming Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival on October 27, the organisers announced on Tuesday, 17th October. Directed by Hansal Mehta, the procedural thriller is an exploration of grief and captures the human cost of polarised times. The story follows cop and single mother Jasmeet Bhamra played by Kareena, who loses her child in a shooting spree. She transfers to a market town north of London and is assigned the case of a missing child. Bankrolled by Ektaa Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, the movie also stars Ash Tandon, Ranveer Brar, and Keith Allen. The Jio MAMI Mumbai International Film Festival will run from October 27 to November 5, 2023.
Moving on. Actor Emraan Hashmi will be seen at loggerheads with Salman Khan’s character in the upcoming film Tiger 3. The film’s trailer revealed Emraan’s menacing character and now the actor has opened up playing the antagonist, Aatish. Emraan told indianexpress.com – “I had an amazing time creating Aatish – a man who is fueled by rage and will go to any length to finish Tiger. I play a very distinctively different villain that is rare in Hindi cinema. His mind is his greatest weapon and he wields immense power over authorities across countries to bring his devious plans into motion.” Tiger 3 directed by Maneesh Sharma and also starring Katrina Kaif, will release in theatres on November 12th.
Bollywood’s ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini celebrated her 75th birthday with zest and vigour, on Monday, 16th October. She hosted a party for her friends in the film industry and her family members. She was joined by her husband, actor Dharmendra, and daughters, Ahana and Esha Deol. Ayushmann Khurrana, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha, Shilpa Shetty, Rani Mukerji, Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, and several others also joined the diva in the celebrations. A video also showed Hema and Dharmendra enjoying a performance of the popular song, “Dream Girl”. Earlier in the day, Esha Deol had wished her mother on her birthday with a heartfelt note and wrote – “A divine lady who lives life on her terms with utmost grace & dignity.”
Meanwhile, filmmaker Karan Johar expressed his high regard and admiration for his Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani star Ranveer Singh. In an interview with Pinkvilla, Karan shared – “Ranveer is a juggernaut of talent. He’s like a chameleon. He can go from Khilji to Murad to Kapil Dev to Rocky in a jiffy.” Karan also said that on the sets of Rocky Aur Rani, Ranveer was in character throughout the shoot. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marked Karan’s return to feature films after a seven-year gap. The film emerged as a hit after an initial hiccup and went on to gross more than Rs 350 crore worldwide.
Actor Richa Chadha recently opened up about her interfaith wedding with actor Ali Fazal. Explaining that they got married under the Special Marriage Act in 2020 due to their different religious backgrounds, she told Bollywood Bubble – “Our wedding remained secret, coinciding with the Covid era when no one was going to the family court. Fortunately, we were able to avoid unwanted attention as these matters typically become public.” Though the couple planned for a wedding celebration in 2020, they had to postpone it due to the pandemic. They legally married, but celebrated their union with friends and family in 2022. Richa and Ali will soon be seen in a documentary about their wedding titled ‘RiAlity’.
Lastly, ahead of the release of her highly-anticipated action drama Tejas, Kangana Ranaut visited the Statue of Unity near Kevadia in Gujarat on Tuesday, 17th October to pay homage to India’s first deputy prime minister and home minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. She shared a picture of herself gazing up at the statue along with a lengthy post heaping praise on Patel. She wrote – ” Visiting the Statue of Unity was a deeply enthralling experience. He is the reason behind the integrity of Bharat as we know it today.” She also posted a video on her Instagram story, featuring the statue with the instrumental version of Vande Mataram playing in the background. Tejas will hit the screens on October 27.
