In our top story. At the Express Adda in New Delhi on Monday, 27th November, filmmaker Meghna Gulzar and actor Vicky Kaushal spoke about shooting their upcoming film Sam Bahadur. They were in conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director, The Indian Express group, and Shubhra Gupta, Film Critic, The Indian Express. Gulzar shared – “With Sam, there was no scope for villainising anybody. It’s not that story. He fought to defend his country.” About playing Manekshaw, Vicky said – “The aura that he had was not limited to his uniform. So I have to give it to Meghna, who held my hand through this because otherwise, it was impossible for me even to attempt this role.”
Moving on. After screening 270 international and Indian films, including 25 feature films and 20 non-feature films, the 54th International Film Festival of India concluded in Goa on Tuesday, 28th November. The closing ceremony of the event saw Endless Borders winning the Best Film Award and the makers of Panchayat Season 2 picking up the Best Web Series Award. Hollywood legend Michael Douglas received the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, along with actor Ayushmann Khurrana, presented the award to Douglas. In his speech, Michael remembered the work of Satyajit Ray and said – “Ray’s films not only represent the triumph of the Indian film industry but the potential of the cross-cultural artistic expression.”
On Tuesday, 28th November, Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar announced the release date of their upcoming film Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, which is scheduled to stream on December 26, 2023, on Netflix. Starring Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Adarsh Gourav, the film is a ‘coming-of-digital-age’ story about three friends in their mid-20s. Set in Mumbai, this narrative of three friends is brought to life by debutant director Arjun Varain Singh. The film chronicles the lives of best friends Imaad, Ahana and Neil, who together navigate aspirations, relationships and emotions. Kho Gaye Hum Kahan is bankrolled by Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby Films. It is written by Zoya Akhtar, Arjun Varain Singh and Reema Kagti.
Meanwhile, superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan is all set to make her acting debut with Zoya Akhtar’s upcoming film The Archies. On Monday, 27th November, Suhana surprised her fans as she announced that she had also made her singing debut with the song “Jab Tum Na Theen” from The Archies. Taking to Instagram, Suhana shared a post, which she captioned – “I sang my first song!! Thank you Zoya Akhtar & Shankar Mahadevan for being so patient with me…please listen with kindness.” Helmed by Zoya Akhtar, the film also marks the acting debut of Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda and producer Boney Kapoor’s Khushi Kapoor. The Archies is all set to stream on Netflix from December 7.
Actor Salman Khan and filmmaker Karan Johar have never teamed up for a full-length film except for Salman in a significant cameo in Karan’s directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998. Now, after a 25-year gap, Salman and Karan are set to collaborate on a full-length film titled The Bull, helmed by Shershaah director Vishnuvardhan and produced by Karan’s Dharma Productions. According to a statement issued by The Bull’s team, the film is based on a true story and will feature Salman Khan in the role of a paramilitary officer. It is also reported that Salman will commence filming in February 2024, and this will be his Eid 2025 gift to fans.
Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor, took audiences by surprise with glimpses of his intense and never-seen-before avatar in his upcoming movie, Animal. In a recent conversation, Ranbir admitted to feeling apprehensive about certain scenes in the film, worrying if they might come across as too intense. However, the actor revealed that his wife and actor, Alia Bhatt played a pivotal role in easing his doubts. In a video clip released on social media, Ranbir shared – “I respect her as an artist and I respect her mind and how she thinks. She has helped me with many scenes where I was scared as an actor.” Directed by Sandeep Vanga Reddy, Animal is set to release in theatres on December 1st.
After making his acting debut with the film Qala, Babil Khan recently starred in Yash Raj Films’ web series, The Railway Men. In a recent interaction, the actor shared that his mother, Sutapa Sikdar, serves as his biggest critic. He also revealed that his mother even critiqued his father, the late actor Irrfan Khan’s national award-winning performance in the 2012 film Paan Singh Tomar. He shared- “My mom is very critical. When she saw Papa in Paan Singh Tomar, she had 17 pages of criticism. So, I can’t stay in the room when Mom is watching my film.” When asked what Sutapa’s response after watching Qala was, Babil said, “Mom said, ‘You did well for the first time.’ That’s all.”
Lastly, one of the most controversial films of recent times, Om Raut’s Adipurush, starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan in key roles, received widespread criticism. Notably, the dialogues crafted by Manoj Muntashir Shukla drew particular scrutiny. During a recent session at Sahitya Aaj Tak 2023, Manoj addressed the entire controversy, expressing his recognition of disappointing his fans. He shared – ” I respect all your complaints and I can confidently affirm that each one of your complaints is valid.” When questioned about the error on his part, Manoj explained that he didn’t recognise it as a mistake at the time and said – “Mistakes become apparent only during retrospection.”
