HOLLYWOOD, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston County deputies confirmed Friday night that a 27-year-old man is in custody after an hours-long standoff.
Andrew Robert Mettal is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping, Charleston County Sheriff’s spokesperson Alexis Douglas said.
The word of Mettal’s arrest came approximately five hours after the standoff began at a home on Mauss Hill Road.
Earlier in the afternoon, Douglas said deputies believed the man was the only person inside the home but she could not confirm whether it is his home. She said deputies had launched a can of pepper spray into the home in an effort to drive him outside.
She also could not say whether he is believed to have any weapons inside the home.
“We’ve been working diligently just to make sure we can get him out safely,” she said.
Deputies at the scene said there was no immediate threat to the public outside the immediate area where the man had barricaded himself.
No nearby homes had been evacuated as of just before 6 p.m. Friday, she said.
The U.S. Marshals Task Force assisted the sheriff’s office during the standoff.
