Filmmaker Karan Johar recently opened up about being among the first celebrities in India to have children via surrogacy. Karan embraced parenthood when he welcomed his twins, Yash and Roohi, via surrogacy in 2017. Karan is co-parenting his children with his 80-year-old mother, film producer Hiroo Johar.
Talking to The Week, Karan revealed that he planned to have children at the age of 40. He said, “When I was 40, my mother asked me what my life plans were since marriage wasn’t on the cards. I told her I really wanted to have babies. She was wonderful [about it], but I was taking my time.”

He also added that once he had announced that he was having children through surrogacy, he could go to the hospital only a month later.
“She reminded me again a year later. I only told her about it once the doctors informed me that three months of pregnancy was complete. The babies were expected in April, but they arrived in February. I had to officially announce their arrival from a flight to London once I knew a couple of newspapers were going to carry the story. I could go to the hospital only a month after,” Karan added.
While Karan is one of the most trolled Bollywood celebrities, he confessed that the internet loves his children and have hardly ever trolled the twins. He said, “I am used to trolling, but surprisingly, my kids were met with so much love. Even now, when I put up anything about them, there is not a single negative comment.”
Recently at the Indian Express Adda Karan had shared how his life changed after becoming a father. He had said, “I think there has been a subliminal change. A change that I don’t know if I can articulate in ways that are definitive. There is a lot more spring in myself, there is a lot more energy to do much more and achieve, and maybe subliminally it’s because I want to leave a legacy that they can be proud of. But simultaneously, I also feel that my parents never dictated any professional decisions for me.”
Other celebrities who opted for surrogacy were Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, the two of them welcomed their son Azad Rao Khan in 2011. Film producer Ekta Kapoor, her brother Tushar Kapoor, actress Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra.
