Actors Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif’s recent release Merry Christmas is holding its ground at the box office, despite facing competition from Telugu and Tamil mass entertainers like Captain Miller and HanuMan in South and their dubbed versions in Hindi. The film on Monday, which marks its fourth day of release entered double digit box office collections and brought the net collection up to Rs 11.38 cr.
According to trade website Sacnilk, Merry Christmas earned Rs 1.65 crore net as per the early estimates. The film has released to a comparatively slow start at the box office, due to its niche genre of being a romantic thriller but word-of-mouth and critical appreciation of Katrina and Vijay’s performance was expected to give the film momentum and attract larger footfall.
The single day collection is the lowest in four days, with the film’s occupancy in Hindi was 13.37 percent. In the film’s Tamil version, the occupancy in theatres was 28.63 percent, which is a decent number, considering the maximum share of screens and shows have already gone to Dhanush’s Captain Miller and Sivakarthikeyan’s Ayalaan. All three films released simultaneously in Tamil theatres, giving each other neck-to-neck competition.

Directed by Sriram Raghavan, Merry Christmas is set is an earlier time period against the backdrop of Mumbai. The film has been loved by the critics as well as the film industry members. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express had written in her review of the film, “They make for an unlikely pair, but they make it work, getting past the few bumps: Katrina Kaif, who has always hinted (remember her in ‘Zero’?) that she can be an actor underneath all that pancake and bump-and-grind, makes us believe in her Maria, with her red lips and seductive change of dress: is she as innocent as she makes herself out to be? And Vijay Sethupati’s Albert is just flat-out terrific, perfectly balancing yearning-and-caring in the way he responds to the lovely Maria, jiving and swaying, and holding us close. I can see the film again just for this pas-de-deux.”
Besides many other Bollywood celebrities, Katrina’s husband, actor Vicky Kaushal too had showered words of praise of Katrina’s performance, calling it her best work-till date. He had written on social media, “MerryChristmas everyone! So freaking proud of you love for how beautifully you have surrendered yourself to Sriram Sir’s masterful story telling and to the complexities of ‘Maria’… her rawness, her mystery, her magic… all done with such honesty and nuance! And that dance… uff! This one’s truly your best work till date.”
It will be interesting to see if the film can continue to draw footfalls till the next weekend. Merry Christmas also stars Sanjay Kapoor, Tinnu Anand, Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kazmi, Radhika Apte and Ashwini Kalsekar.
