A former funeral parlor will soon become the new Port Washington Police District headquarters.
The property at 128 Main St. in Port Washington, formerly occupied by the Knowles Funeral Home, was purchased by the police district for $8.8 million. The police district estimates it will cost a total of about $30 million to renovate and equip the new facility, for which it will seek a bond from the Town of North Hempstead, according to a police statement.
The police district said it has outgrown its current headquarters at 500 Port Washington Blvd. which it is selling. It plans to use the proceeds from the sale to replace a portion of the capital reserve funds it used to buy the former funeral home property.
According to the police district statement, the new headquarters will be big enough to accommodate its 80-member force and staff and is centrally located to improve response times. It will also include a new community space that will be available for resident groups to host meetings and other events, according to the statement.
The police district has retained Melville-based H2M architects + engineers to design its new Main Street headquarters.
