Sacramento-based postal logistics contractor Matheson Trucking Inc. appears to be shutting down its operations, according to an internal memo to employees.
Matheson provides logistics, regional trucking, mail transport and aircraft ground support to the U.S. Postal Service and commercial carriers.
In the memo sent to employees, Matheson said: “With deep regret, we announce that Matheson will permanently close on January 31, 2024, after 60 years of providing award-winning service for our customers. This closure will affect our Matheson Trucking Inc., Matheson Postal Services and Matheson Flight Extenders businesses.”
Charles Mellor, chief restructuring officer for Matheson, said “no comment,” in an email response to the Business Journal.
“The Matheson companies have experienced tremendous growth in the past five years both in revenues and its workforce. However, recent changes to our business, and drastic losses in contracts have led us to file Chapter 11, and ultimately this very difficult decision,” the memo stated. “On behalf of the Matheson family and executive management, I sincerely thank each and every one of you for all the hard work you have invested in our company throughout the years. Your unwavering support and excellent work have been invaluable to us, and we wish you all the best in all your future endeavors.”
Matheson Flight Extenders Inc. and Matheson Postal Services are wholly owned subsidiaries of Matheson Trucking, which was founded in 1962.
Matheson Flight Extenders and Matheson Postal Services filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in May 2022. Another affiliate, Matheson Trucking filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection two months later. Most of the unsecured creditors listed in the Matheson Trucking case were listed as nearly $600,000 in legal claims from a race discrimination lawsuit.
In August, Matheson said it would close sorting facilities in Massachusetts, Georgia and Maryland, at a cost of 1,000 jobs, according to trucking trade publication FreightWaves.
In September, Matheson announced to state employment officials it would permanently close a facility in Long Beach in November at a cost of 257 jobs. In October, the company’s subsidiary Matheson Flight Extenders Inc. told the California Employment Development Department it would have a permanent layoff of 124 employees at its location at Metro Air Park in Sacramento, to take effect this week. In October, Matheson Flight Extenders sent the EDD a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice for the permanent closure of a facility in San Leandro with 72 layoffs to take effect at the end of next week.
In the internal memo, Matheson said it would send a 60-day notice on Dec. 1 to remaining employees. The number of remaining local employees is not stated.
Matheson’s headquarters were at 9785 Goethe Road in Sacramento, according to its website.
In a previous note to employees, Matheson said the layoffs are the result of the Postal Service not renewing certain contracts.
Matheson was sued in 2012 in federal court in Denver in a racial discrimination action by employees, according to records from the U.S. District Court in Denver.
The Colorado employees alleged that a company manager in Denver in 2010 and 2011 was discriminating against certain employees because of their race, effectively demoting and terminating certain people. A federal jury in 2015 found in favor of the employees. In the bankruptcy, the six employees are said to be owed $93,500 each under the claim “legal settlement.”
