Filmmaker Karan Johar said that contrary to popular belief, he has only ever directed a handful of male movie stars in his career, and that the first superstar he worked with after Shah Rukh Khan was only Ranbir Kapoor, and then Ranveer Singh. Speaking highly about his Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani star, Karan said that he is in awe of the actor’s ability to transform into different characters, like a ‘chameleon’.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Karan laughed that Ranveer’s wife, Deepika Padukone, tells him that ‘every six months, a new person walks into her house’, such is the intensity with which Ranveer immerses himself into his characters. “He is a juggernaut of talent. He’s like a chameleon. He can go from Khilji to Murad to Rocky to Kapil Dev. Deepika tells me that every six months, a new person walks into her house.”
Karan said that on the sets of Rocky Aur Rani, Ranveer was in character throughout the shoot. “In his conversations with me, I was talking to Rocky Randhawa, I was not talking to Ranveer Singh. He would say, ‘Hows you?’ He would call me up and say, ‘Ranveer Singh this side’. He never left that character. It was phenomenal, and I’m so grateful for him and the film.”
Released earlier this year, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marked Karan’s return to feature films after a seven-year gap. He had directed a couple of shorts in the interim period, but staying away from a full-fledged theatrical movie had made him a nervous wreck before its release. But to his relief, the film emerged as a hit after an initial hiccup, and went on to gross more than Rs 350 crore worldwide. Also starring Alia Bhatt as the co-lead, Rocky Aur Rani featured industry icons such as Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan in supporting roles.
