Chennai-based actor-director RJ Balaji doesn’t agree with filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s treatment of women in his blockbuster film Animal. Balaji said that he deliberately didn’t watch the Ranbir Kapoor starrer in a theatre as he couldn’t see the audience enjoy such scenes.
Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna and Triptii Dimri, had several misogynist scenes, which were condemned by the critics.
In an interview with Indiaglitz Balaji said, “I never watched Animal in theatres. I know there were many people who ask us to watch a movie like a movie and treat it as a craft. But, the thing that struck me was people are locked up inside a theatre where they watch a guy kick a girl or hurl abuses at her. I felt bad seeing the audience enjoy the film.”

The filmmaker, who is also a radio jockey, criticised the film, which in his opinion can influence youngsters to treat women poorly.
“I didn’t want to feel that this is a normal reaction to such scenes. I didn’t want it to subconsciously influence me to keep such scenes in my film. I heard that there was a scene where an actor (Tirptii Dimri) was asked to lick his shoe. Youngsters who watch this film would think it’s okay to do that to women.”
Animal has been 2023’s highest grossing film, with a business of approximately Rs 900 crore worldwide. The film highlighted an emotionally unstable relationship between a father and son (played by Ranbir and Anil Kapoor).
The movie, which released on December 1, is Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s third directorial, with the first two being Telugu film Arjun Reddy and second one being its Hindi remake Kabir Singh.
