Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s latest film Animal is making noise for many things, one of them being its music. Bobby Deol’s entry song “Jamal Kudu” and war cry “Arjan Vailly”, which has Ranbir Kapoor’s character Ranvijay on a killing spree, are among the most popular songs from the film’s soundtrack. In a latest interview, Vanga revealed that the song ‘Arjan Vailly’ existed on YouTube for five years before he took notice of it, with the same lyrics, voice, and tune. But it never caught the attention of the audience.
Vanga, while speaking to Connect FM Canada, spoke about the importance of music to him. He said he cannot go ahead with his story if he is unaware of the music he will be playing. Talking about the placement of ‘Arjan Vailly’ in the movie, the filmmaker explained, “When the axe fight is happening, I wanted a song. I have never done a lip-sync song. I wanted a full rageful, courageous song that too, the guys (who play Ranbir’s cousins and are standing at the back in the song) are from ‘pind (village)’, in Punjabi.”
But since he wanted to dub the film in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, he didn’t go ahead with lip-syncing in the song. Vanga further shared how he came across “Arjan Vailly” which is a popular Punjabi war cry. “I was searching for an old folk song and we found (Bhupinder) Babbal ji’s song on YouTube. It had 350 views in five years, same song, the same tune, but nobody noticed it. I said I need this song and we got hold of this man, he was somewhere in Canada. He flew to Chandigarh and I met him in Delhi. I told him I need your song and he graciously removed it from YouTube and we added some music to it and that’s it,” shared Vanga.
Composed by Manan Bhardwaj, ‘Arjan Vailly’ is sung and penned by Bhupinder Babbal. It has over 96 million views on YouTube.
While writing his story, Vanga has the habit of collecting “mood material” for his films to keep himself “motivated” about his story. He does a lot of research before starting the shoot of the film and he had the song “Jamal Kudu” with him even before he met Bobby Deol and convinced him to play Abrar in the movie.
“I found this music for an Iranian song somewhere on YouTube and the moment I heard the song, I thought this is the song to introduce the villain, and I thought of Bobby Deol. Even before I met Bobby sir, this song was in my collection. We have modified it a bit,” shared Vanga, while revealing that he found the Marathi song “Dolby Walya”, for his film when he was driving from Bombay to Goa and heard it on on the radio.
Animal is a hit at the box office. The film has done a business of Rs 522 crore within three weeks of its release and is still going strong at the ticket counters.
