It will be a star war at the box office on December 21 and 22 with the simultaneous release of Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki and Parbhas’ Salaar. While the advance ticket sales for both films are yet to start in the domestic market, the makers of both films have already opened advance bookings overseas. Initial reports suggest that Salaar will take a significantly higher start overseas and Dunki will trail by a substantial difference.
Until Tuesday afternoon, Rajkumar Hirani’s drama Dunki did a business of $566k, with $185k coming from North America, $68k from the UK and $120k from Australia, reported Box Office Worldwide. According to a TOI report, in the US, the film has sold almost 5400 tickets across 320 locations for 915 shows.
Dunki also stars Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani and others. It revolves around Shah Rukh’s character and his three friends who wish to shift base to a foreign land for better work opportunities. The trailer of the film has received a mixed response from the audience.
Meanwhile, Prashanth Neel’s directorial Salaar is way ahead of Dunki in the overseas market. Film trade analyst Girish Johar shared the collection of both the films at different locations. The Times of India reported that the film sold 20,461 tickets for 1,104 shows in the US.
The fans of Prashant Neel’s brand of cinema are eagerly waiting for Salaar. In the domestic market, the advance ticket sales of the film will begin on December 15. Also starring Prithviraj Sukumaran as the antagonist and Shruti Haasan as the female lead, the film appears to be a true-blue masala entertainer from its trailer.
Salaar producer Vijay Kirgandur of Hombale Films had earlier said that they are trying for an equal release for Salaar and Dunki. “When we have a solo release, the occupancy generally will be around 60-70%. Some screens will go to Aquaman but between Salaar and Dunki, we hope to get 50-50 screens in the best scenario. In such a scenario, if an occupancy of 90-100% is achieved, it’ll be a good result for both films,” he told Bollywood Hungama.
However, an earlier report suggested that Dunki is already in profit after selling its non-theatrical rights. As per a report in Pinkvilla, the film was made on a budget of Rs 85 crore and after adding the print and publicity cost, the cost of the film was around Rs 120 crore. The report added that Dunki has already sold its “non-theatrical rights” in “the range of Jawan”, which means the film is already “sitting on a massive table profit in the vicinity of Rs 100 crore.”
Salaar will release in five languages Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. It has a runtime of 2 hours and 55 minutes.
