A tram at Universal Studios Hollywood crashed Saturday night, injuring 15 people.
Firefighters and medical personnel responded to the Los Angeles theme park about 9 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“Units were dispatched to a tram accident where 15 patients were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries,” the agency wrote on X.
The tram was traveling down a hill when its last car struck a rail, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“There was some type of issue with the brakes,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Maria Abal told the paper. “We don’t exactly know what yet.”
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash.
The tram ride at Universal Studios Hollywood, named the “World-Famous Studio Tour,” is one of the most popular rides in the park. The attraction takes guests on a back lot tour, showcasing scenes from the company’s many famous films, including “Jaws.” More than 100 people can fit on the tram at full capacity, though it’s unclear how many were onboard for Saturday night’s crash.
The “World-Famous Studio Tour” is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and Universal has announced plans for special features on the tour to mark the occasion. The special edition tour was scheduled to begin this coming Friday, and the company has not said if those plans will change following Saturday night’s crash.
“We are working to support our guests and understand the circumstances that led to the accident,” a Universal spokesman told KTLA.
