Salman Khan has always marched to the beat of his own drum, veteran journalist Anupama Chopra said as she recalled stories about the star in a recent video celebrating his 35th anniversary in the movies. In the video, shared on Film Companion and reposted on Reddit recently, she said that her first interaction with Salman happened when she was assisting a foreign photographer on a shoot with Bollywood stars.
She said that in the early ’90s, before Salman had done Hum Aapke Hain Koun but after he had already established himself as a star with Maine Pyar Kiya, the American photographer Mary Ellen Mark came down to Mumbai, and insisted on getting Salman to pose for a shoot featuring Bollywood stars. “I was the flunkie on the shoot,” Anupama said, adding, “I don’t even think I spoke to him, but the manager said, ‘He doesn’t want to pose, but he’s deeply interested in photography but would like to assist’. This man has been a mystery for three decades.”
Her second story was about Salman insisting that in exchange for an interview with him, her publication make a donation to a charity of his choice. He said that it was only fair that they spend some money, because they were obviously going to sell a lot of magazines with him on the cover. But the most humorous aspect to this story was Anupama’s recollection of what Salman was doing when she came to meet him at restaurant. “Lalli Dhawan, David’s wife, had played mediator and set up this appointment, where I tried to woo him into doing this interview. It was amazing, we were sitting in this restaurant, and he was eating tiramisus, one after another. Lines of tiramisus were coming,” she said.
She also recalled a third anecdote, where Salman came onto the set for a talk show, and promptly touched her feet. Asked why he’d done that, he said that it is important to respect elders. Salman remains one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, even three-and-a-half decades after making his debut. He will aim for a career resurgence with the upcoming Tiger 3, slated for a Diwali release.
