Sunny Deol has maintained the image of being an action star for over 40 years now and even though he has been in the public eye for most part of his life, he has managed to preserve his personal space as much as he can. Sunny got married to his wife Pooja Deol in 1984 and even though he has been married for almost 39 years, he has never really spoken about their relationship.
Being a movie star, Sunny has gone through his share of link up rumours but he has always maintained that such rumours never disturbed his personal life. In fact, in a 2001 interview with Filmfare, when Sunny was asked about his female fan following and if it bothered his wife Pooja, the Gadar 2 star said that Pooja is an “excellent wife” who has “never complained.” He shared, “I’m sure she’s okay with my female fans. Pooja has been an excellent wife. She’s been extremely understanding about my profession. She’s been my strength in my dark moments. It’s not been easy for her but she has never complained. We’ve known each other for over 20 years and our relationship is just perfect today.”
Sunny has been answering questions about Pooja’s reactions to his female fan following since the 1980s as during a 1984 interview with ITMB, the actor was asked as to how his then-fianceé Pooja reacted to his link-up rumours. When he was asked if this kind of news reached her, he said, “I don’t know if it reaches her. There’s nothing like that.” He also acknowledged that such rumours were a “part of the game.”
Sunny’s younger son Rajveer Deol, who recently made his film debut with Dono, was also asked about how his mother dealt with such rumours. Saying that his mother “doesn’t give a s**t about Bollywood,” Rajveer said that as a child, he would take such rumours very seriously and would get affected, but it was his mother Pooja who helped him in differentiating between reality and rumours. “I would ask my mom certain questions and she would tell me,” he told Zoom Entertainment.
Pooja Deol has always stayed away from the media and until the wedding of their son Karan Deol, which happened in June, most of Sunny’s fans had never even seen her. Years ago, when Sunny was asked if his wife was asked to stay away from the limelight, the actor said that Pooja is her own person who makes her own decisions. He told Deccan Chronicle at the time, “Neither my mother nor my wife was forced to stay away from the limelight. My wife is her own person. She has always had the liberty to make her own decisions. To not make public appearances is her own call. Like I said, neither my father nor I have forced the women in our family to follow our rules.”
Sunny and Pooja have been married for 39 years and are parents to two sons – Karan and Rajveer.
