Dec. 28: Yankees among teams interested in Josh Hader (report)
The New York Yankees are among the teams interested in former Padres reliever Josh Hader, per a new report from The Athletic's Jim Bowden.
That said, Hader signing with the Yankees is no sure thing, as Bowden said that Hader is looking for a contract that eclipses the five-year, $102 million contract that Edwin Díaz signed with the Mets last offseason.
Additionally, Bowden added some additional insight into the Yankees thinking for the rest of the offseason, as he said that the team prefers to acquire a starter rather than getting a closer. One name that Bowden mentioned was Jordan Montgomery, saying the Yankees are "hoping" to get Montgomery back in free agency, but they wouldn't be afraid to pivot to Hader if Montgomery signed elsewhere.
Dec. 21: What's next for Yanks after missing on Yamamoto?
Following an aggressive pursuit of coveted Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Yankees came up short in their quest to pair him with reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole atop New York's starting rotation. Yamamoto has reportedly agreed to a 12-year, $325 million deal with the Dodgers.
What's next for the Bronx Bombers?
According to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, the club may now pivot to other top starters on the market, including left-handers Jordan Montgomery and Shōta Imanaga. He added that the Yanks may even go the trade route, with Brewers righty Corbin Burnes in mind. More >
Dec. 21: Yanks to be 'aggressive' in bolstering rotation, even without Yamamoto (report)
In contrast to how the Mets are expected to move forward after missing out on Japanese starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Ken Rosenthal reported in an article for The Athletic (subscription required) that the Yankees would be "aggressive" in upgrading their starting rotation whether or not they signed the 25-year-old right-hander.
"A rotation without Yamamoto would require at least one more starter, and the Yankees, at least internally, have discussed a reunion with free-agent lefty Jordan Montgomery," Rosenthal writes. "The team also could seek to build what one source described as a 'super-charged' bullpen."
As for building that type of bullpen, Rosenthal noted that three of the best relievers on the market remain unsigned — Josh Hader, Jordan Hicks and Robert Stephenson.
Dec. 21: Yanks eyeing Imanaga as fallback option (report)
The Yankees have been considering Yamamoto's countryman, left-hander Shōta Imanaga, as a fallback option, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman in an article for the New York Post.
Heyman also mentioned some other clubs who have already been linked to Imanaga, including the Mets, Red Sox and Cubs.
Imanaga, 30, isn't as young as the 25-year-old Yamamoto, but he owns a 3.18 ERA over eight seasons with Nippon Professional Baseball's Yokohama DeNA BayStars.
Dec. 7: Yankees interested in RHP Jordan Hicks (source)
Yankees relievers averaged 94.7 mph on their fastballs last season, tied for sixth-fastest in the Majors. That number could rise in 2024 with the possible addition of one of the hardest throwers in the sport.
A source tells MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that the Yankees are interested in free-agent right-righter Jordan Hicks. The 27-year-old is coming off a season split between the Cardinals and Blue Jays in which he posted his best full-season marks in ERA (3.29), strikeout rate (28.4%) and whiff rate (28.2%). His four-seamer and sinker each average better than 100 mph, and Hicks' 101.3 mph average fastball velocity ranked second in MLB.
MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi reported Wednesday that the Angels, Astros and Rangers were a few other clubs also eyeing Hicks, who has a 3.85 career ERA over five seasons.
