The British Film and Television Academy has announced the 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort, 42 creatives working across film, games and TV from across the U.K., U.S. and India selected to take part in its flagship talent initiative.
Held in partnership with Netflix, the BAFTA Breakthrough program — which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary — is awarded to those either in the midst or on the cusp of their breakthrough moment and is a year-long initiative providing one-to-one meetings, career guidance, mentorship, full voting membership, networking events and access to BAFTA events and screenings, all aimed at helping them take their careers to the next level.
Over the last 10 years, Breakthrough alumni have included some of the most in-demand stars working today, including Florence Pugh, Tom Holland, Laurie Nunn, Letitia Wright, Jessie Buckley and Josh O’Connor.
Among the 2023 crop are standout performers from the past year, including The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey, as well as filmmakers involved in some of the most acclaimed feature debuts, such as Scrapper writer/director Charlotte Regan.
“BAFTA Breakthrough is a gold standard program. And the fact that we are celebrating our ten-year anniversary is a testament to the dedication of our incredible alumni, industry supporters, juries, and industry advisers,” said BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip. “This year’s cohort is really impressive, having already achieved credits in high-end TV drama, debut films, documentaries, hair and make design; and game design. BAFTA Breakthrough is designed to harness that early success and develop the skills for life-long, rewarding careers. Congratulations to this year’s BAFTA Breakthroughs.”
