Following reports that exhibitors are showing preference for Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki over Prabhas’ Salaar, the producers of the latter have opted not to provide copies of their film to PVR-Inox and Miraj theatres in some states, according to Times Now.
Amit Sharma, Miraj Group CEO, expressed his confusion over the Salaar makers feeling ‘hurt’ by the situation, asserting that the “decision of allotment of the number of shows should rest with the exhibitor.” He emphasised that exhibitors understand the audience’s pulse and are best positioned to determine how films should be allocated, given their knowledge of viewer preferences.
Chaluve Gowda of Hombale Films, the production house behind Salaar, confirmed to the news portal that Salaar will not be released in PVR-Inox, and Miraj outlets in some locations due to perceived unfair treatment. He revealed that this decision means Salaar will not be released in the outlets of these national chains in the South. Additionally, Gowda accused these exhibitors of entirely sidelining Salaar in favour of Dunki in some outlets.
Gowda stressed the importance of fairness in the industry and stated, “We want the game to be fair.” He also stated that if exhibitors adjust their plans, Salaar makers are open to releasing their film in those outlets.
A trade source told Indianexpress.com that Dunki team has given a clear-cut clause that they don’t want to share the screen with Salaar. “The clause says, either give us all four shows, or don’t give any. And if you don’t give us, then we will also see what to do in future with other films.” Dunki is being distributed by Pen Marudhar while Salaar is being released by Anil Thadani’s AA Films.
The source shared that every distributor will try to give their best for showcasing but added that eventually Dunki team won’t get what they want. “Dunki team’s point of view is that they were the first to announce, so they deserve priority, and on top of that, Shah Rukh is coming with two Rs 500 crore films. They will of course go all out to give it the best possible showcasing.”
Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki will hit theatres on December 21 and Prabhas-starrer Salaar will release a day after on December 22.
