Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal is currently dominating the box office, despite facing criticism for its portrayal of gory violence and toxic masculinity. In a recent interview, the filmmaker discussed the movie’s intense fight sequences, drawing inspiration from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. He also delved into the influence of the iconic 1972 crime drama, The Godfather, on his work.
Expressing his lifelong fascination with flawed characters in cinema, Sandeep told Galatta Plus, “Whatever films I liked in my childhood were all of flawed men. When I went to film school, I was exposed to flawed men watching the movies of David Fincher, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick. So, I felt like this is a zone in which I can tell stories.”
Discussing the impact of The Godfather on his filmmaking and the parallels with Animal, Sandeep Reddy Vanga explained, “It was very organic because I saw The Godfather for like some 30-40 times. Even in Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh, they said there is a bit of Devdas. I watched too many versions of Devdas so maybe…I didn’t actually try to pay homage to The Godfather but the party thing in the beginning of Animal is similar to The Godfather. But the sister thing, Michael in The Godfather never tells his sister that he killed her husband. Telling the sister was a little overboard in Animal but it went smooth, it didn’t feel unnecessary.”
Acknowledging that a specific fight sequence in Animal was inspired by Kill Bill, Sandeep said, “The inspiration is from Kill Bill. In Kill Bill there is fight sequence that is never ending. I was hooked to it. I saw it multiple times and saw it holding my attention. First when I saw that scene in Kill Bill, I thought it was so smartly done. That remained in me. When I read it in the reviews that Kill Bill style action was used in Animal, then I realised it.”
