Actor Vicky Kaushal, despite technically being a ‘nepo baby’, was actually brought up on the fringes of the film industry. His father is veteran action director Sham Kaushal, who encouraged him to pursue acting but didn’t have the clout that could guarantee Vicky lucrative offers without putting in the effort. In an interview, he was asked if people from the industry who come from more privileged backgrounds put on an act to appear middle class, because they don’t want to be attacked.
Both of Vicky’s 2023 releases — The Great Indian Family and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke — tackle middle class family dynamics and aim to offer ‘relatable’ entertainment to audiences. Asked if some privileged people from the industry pretend to be ‘relatable’ to avoid hate, Vicky told Instant Bollywood, “No, I don’t think so. I have many friends from the industry… Right now, the thing is that the audience can see through it. How long can you keep the pretence on? A day? Two days? Four weeks, a year? And it’s a very tiring process also.”
Vicky Kaushal said that it’s not like people hate privilege, it’s just that they don’t appreciate inauthenticity. “If you pretend to be someone you’re not, that’s what they hate. If you’re true to yourself, and that’s what you present, nobody will have (any complaints). That’s what I believe. That’s what I, as an audience member, always relate to. I don’t think about whether someone is actually middle class or not. If someone isn’t genuine, even if they’re a middle class person, then you can’t relate with them,” he said.
A majority of the promotional activities for Vicky’s last release were devoted to him and co-star Sara Ali Khan recalling stories from their lives that presented them as relatable, middle class people. The movie did very well at the box office, and Vicky would be hoping for The Great Indian Family to do just as well when it debuts in theatres on Friday.
